3rd annual ACVO Service Dog Event- May 2010: Recap

The 3rd annual Service Dog Event took place the entire month of May. All 3 of our doctors participated by performing complimentary eye exams on service dogs. Below are some of the Service Dogs that came in for the event!

Bonnie Bell is a young Bloodhound in training who LOVES people! She is waiting to get certified.

This is Horton who is also a service dog who had an eye exam at our Service Dog Event this year.

Kaiza is a black German Shepherd Dog who has a serious job! She has been a service dog for years now in the areas of search and rescue, scent-specific trailing, and cadaver detection. She has been successful in finding cadavers and has helped find evidence in an arson case. She trains about 20 hours per week and goes on about 30 missions per year.

Nick is a handsome 3-year-old Labrador Retriever. He is currently training in search & rescue and will soon be going out on his first search. In the meantime, he gets practice doing his favorite thing-trailing deer!

Meet Raven and Carlo, 3-year-old German Shepherd Dogs who have worked in search and rescue for 2 years. Their human actually ran a 50-dog canine unit for Search & Rescue! Amazing!! They are both trained to search for cadavers and folks lost due to Alzheimer's.

We were happy to meet "Popeye" for the first time during our 2010 ACVO Service Dog Event. At the time of our May event, he was still in training and VERY excited about getting in the field! He is being trained for air scent and it will be exciting to hear of his work. We certainly hope we can see him at this event in 2011.

Porter and Bazuka are regulars at our Service Dog Eye Exam Events at NWAES. Their specialty is avalanche search and rescue. In fact, Bazuka received an American Red Cross Hero award for actually finding a woman lost in the woods., Both dogs have been trained since they were puppies. Porter is 11 years old and semi-retired; Bazuka 6 and ready to go! They are trained to ride on ski lifts and have been on many helicopter rides. Note that they love sitting on our exam room chairs!

This is sweet Henny from the Seattle Fire Department. She has been to all 3 annual Service Dog Events at NWAES. She was originally trained at Guide
Dogs for the Blind. But her strong sense of smell kept getting her in trouble. She kept stopping to smell things! What a perfect dog to train to work for the fire department and that is what she does now. She is an accelerant detection dog and has been a service dog now for 4 years.
Carlo came to our Service Dog Event in 2009 and again this year. He has been in search and rescue for 2 years and his specialty is trailing. He is trained to find cadavers and lost Alzheimer's individuals.
Cash, Sam, and Annie are contraband and narcotics detection dogs who were examined pro bono during our Annual Service Dog Event. Cash has been a working dog for the past 8 years. He works in a variety of places including in schools and on ships. When he retires, Annie (who recently started training) will take over!
Amika and Romeo both had complimentary, screening eye exams at our Annual Service Dog Event. Romeo is a 12-year old Standard Schnauzer who has been a service dog for 6 years. He performs search and rescue and trailing. He was also examined at NWAES during the 2009 Event.
